Paris columnist, author of "Saging".

In a shocking display of contempt for jurisprudence and human rights, Iran has executed 63-year-old Ali Saremi -- a political dissident since 1979 who spent a total of 24 years in prison, and was hanged on December 28 for "waging war against God". Many European nations have already condemned this brutality, but so far the U.S. government has remained silent.

Coincidentally, a major symposium on Iran was held in Paris last week, featuring an impressive line-up of American and European dignitaries who were pleading for the U.S. to remove MEK (also known as PMOI) from its list of terrorist organizations. Saremi was a member of that group, which has been struggling for several decades to bring a democratic government to Iran.
You've never heard of MEK? No wonder. It represents a large group of Iranian dissidents, the Mujahadeen. They opposed the egomaniacal shah, Reza Pahlavi; they opposed the religious fanatic, Ayatollah Khomeini; and they oppose the current leader, the nuclear-crazed Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
MEK's charismatic spokeswoman is 57-year-old Maryam Radjavi, who lives in France and has the backing of numerous European officials and parliamentarians. She spoke to a cheering crowd at the symposium, along with Rudolph Giuliani and several former Bush officials -- Michael Mukasey, Tom Ridge, Frances Townsend -- who denounced the ongoing American policy that demonizes the dissidents and thereby mollifies the repressive Ahmadinejad regime.

About 3,500 exiled Mujahadeen live in a community in Iraq called Ashraf, about 70 miles west of the Iranian border and 40 miles north of Baghdad. It is also called Camp Ashraf, because of its insularity, and its precarious and dangerous existence. (Ali Saremi visited his son there, in 2007 -- another charge against him.)
In 2003, American forces invading Iraq took control of Ashraf, disarmed the MEK members, screened them for past terrorist acts, and assumed maintenance of the facility. This provided a certain degree of security, even though Washington kept MEK on its "terrorist" list, as it had been for three decades -- always with the intention of appeasing Iranian regimes by discrediting the dissident movement.
With the American forces now pulling out of Iraq, Baghdad is claiming control of the camp. This will seriously endanger the people of Ashraf, who are already being attacked by Iraqi military and paramilitary units, and who are being blasted night and day by blaring loudspeakers urging them to surrender to Tehran. It is clear that Iraqi authorities are acting in conjunction with the Iranian regime to suppress, or eliminate, these dissidents. If they are sent back to Iran, they will surely be arrested, and possibly tortured and killed, as were many protesters after the last Iranian elections.
Allan Gerson, a Washington-based lawyer who has represented victims of terrorism and human rights abuses, insists that MEK must be removed from America's terror list, and that these Iranian dissidents "must be supported, not shackled, in their struggle for a democratic Iran." It is a disgraceful and morally reprehensible policy, he says, that essentially appeases the Ahmadinejad regime, and blocks the possibility of bringing democracy to Iran.

Does America have the guts, and the integrity, to finally help these people? Or are we going to continue to play poker with Ahmadinejad, bluffing our way into a deadly showdown?

Man convicted after mistaking victim for former classmate who had bullied him at school

Saeed Kamali Dehghan
In a literal application of the law of an eye for an eye, an Iranian man convicted of blinding another man in an acid attack has been sentenced to lose an eye and an ear.
The man, identified only as Hamid, was also ordered to pay blood money after he was found guilty of the 2005 attack, according to Iran's semi-official Fars news agency. Hamid told police he had mistaken his victim – identified only as Davoud – for a former classmate who had bullied him at school.
"In high school, some of the classmates bullied me so much that we had to move from the city I was living in to another one. This was carved in my mind and I couldn't get over it," he said, according to Fars.
"I bought acid and went back to my former high school and waited for some of the classmates to come out. When he [Davoud] came out, I followed him and threw acid on him and I also injured my own legs by doing so."
Davoud, who was 22 at the time of the attack, denied ever meeting Hamid, and said the two-year age difference between them meant they could never have been in the same class.
In a similar case in November 2008, Majid Movahedi was sentenced to lose both eyes after being found guilty of throwing acid at Ameneh Bahramia woman who refused to marry him. It has not been confirmed whether the sentence has been carried out.
However, in October Iran amputated the hand of a convicted thief at a prison in the central city of Yazd.
Recently Iran has come under fire for sentencing Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, 43, to be stoned to death for adultery. She has so far escaped the sentence because of an international outcry.
Iran has executed at least 200 people in the past 10 months, according the human rights website rahana.org

The Washington Post
By Edward Cody
Washington Post Foreign Service
Thursday, December 23, 2010; A06
PARIS - A group of prominent U.S. Republicans associated with homeland security told a forum of cheering Iranian exiles here Wednesday that President Obama's policy toward Iran amounts to futile appeasement that will never persuade Tehran to abandon its nuclear projects.
The Americans - former New York mayor Rudolph Giuliani, former secretary of homeland security Tom Ridge, former White House homeland security adviser Frances Fragos Townsend and former attorney general Michael Mukasey - demanded that Obama instead take the controversial Mujaheddin-e Khalq (MEK) opposition group off the U.S. list of foreign terrorist organizations and incorporate it into efforts to overturn the mullah-led government in Tehran.
"Appeasement of dictators leads to war, destruction and the loss of human lives," Giuliani declared. "For your organization to be described as a terrorist organization is just really a disgrace."
The four GOP figures appeared at a rally organized by the French Committee for a Democratic Iran, a pressure group formed to support MEK.
Their crowd-pleasing appeals, they said, reflected growing bipartisan sentiment in the U.S. Congress and elsewhere that the 13-year-old terrorist designation of the Paris-based dissident group should be ended because it is unfounded and has not made the Iranian government easier to deal with or halt its nuclear program. In addition, they noted, a Washington federal appeals court in July ordered Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton to review the listing, and cast doubt on some of the information brought forward to support it.
The group, the largest and most active Iranian exile organization, was added to the list in 1997 as part of an effort by President Bill Clinton's administration to reach out to Tehran. It has been maintained since, apparently to avoid antagonizing the Iranian leadership while the United States fought wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The accusations against Obama, while consonant with other conservative statements on the matter, seemed particularly starkly worded.
"If the United States truly wants to put pressure on the Iranian regime, it takes more than talk and it takes more than sanctions," Townsend said, without specifying what should be done.
More explicit, Mukasey urged the Obama administration to offer "all possible technical and covert support to those fighting to end oppression in Iran." He added, "What it has done and what it is doing is nothing less than an embarrassment."
All four speakers equated the exile group with the Iranian opposition, saying it must be supported to help get rid of the government headed by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and overseen by a committee of senior Shiite Muslim scholars. Only then, they said, can the world be certain that Iran will not develop nuclear weapons and threaten the Middle East.
"The United States should not just be on your side," Giuliani said. "It should be enthusiastically on your side. You want the same things we want."
Reports from Iran have noted, however, that the outpouring of opposition after last year's contested election revolved around unsuccessful presidential candidates who live in Iran and not the Paris-based MEK. The exiles lost much of their following in the country after their armed faction, which was based in Iraq, functioned as a division of the Iraqi army during the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s.

Iranian dissident executed in prison
Iran Focus
Tehran/London, Dec. 28 - An Iranian political prisoner, Ali Saremi, was hanged in Tehran's notorious Evin Prison on Tuesday on the charge of "Moharebeh", or "waging war against God".
Saremi, 63, was a member of the People's Mojahedin Organisation of Iran (PMOI), according to a statement from the Tehran Prosecutor's Office. He had been convicted of carrying out publicity against the theocratic regime.
Saremi had been arrested on four occasions since the 1979 revolution and incarcerated for a total of 24 years. He was last arrested in August 2007 during a ceremony marking the anniversary of the 1988 massacre of political prisoners and sentenced to death following anti-government protests in December 2009.
Maryam Rajavi, head of the opposition coalition National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), said in a statement that Saremi's execution highlighted the regime's "fear of the PMOI and the Iranian Resistance" and was an attempt to take revenge following the "repeated failures of its plots" against PMOI members based in Camp Ashraf, Iraq. "This great crime only reflects the regime's inability and frustration in the face of the resolute Iranian youths and members of the PMOI who are determined to overthrow the clerical rule and establish freedom and the rule of people in Iran", she said.
A second NCRI statement said authorities had arrested Saremi's wife, daughter and sister and others who protested his execution outside the prison. Saremi's son Akbar is a member of the PMOI in Camp Ashraf. Prior to his arrest in 2007, Ali Saremi had travelled to Camp Ashraf to visit his son.
The United Kingdom "strongly condemned" the execution of Saremi and Ali Akbar Siyadat, who was charged with spying for Israel.
"We are deeply concerned by reports of the execution of Ali Saremi and Ali Akbar Siyadat this morning. The UK strongly condemns these executions and opposes the death penalty in all circumstances", a Foreign Office spokesperson told Iran Focus.
Alejo Vidal Quadras, Vice President of the European Parliament and President of the International Committee In Search of Justice (ISJ), "strongly condemned" Saremi's execution and called on the European Union to do the same.
The Friends of a Free Iran Intergroup at the European Parliament also condemned Saremi's execution, calling it, "another crime for which the mullahs will be held to account when freedom is finally restored to that beleaguered nation".
Amnesty International said in August that it was aware of five other men sentenced to death in Iran for alleged links to the PMOI. They were Ja'far Kazemi, Javad Lari, Abdolreza Ghanbari, Ahmad Daneshpour Moghaddam and Mohsen Daneshpour Moghaddam.
